We are not all reading from the same books. We have different books on history. We have different books on science. We have different books on economics. We have different books on ethics. We have different books on morality. If you are reading from a book that is different than mine then you are a complete moron.
This pretty much sums up where we are as a country and world today. We are basically at a point where it is impossible for people with different views and ideas to have a meaningful discussion about complex or simple topics.
Have you ever tried to discuss a topic with someone that has a different point of view than you? It really is impossible to have a discussion of any substance. There is no source of facts or information that you will be able to provide that is going to change the views of the person. They are going to hold onto those views until they die.
On a weekly basis I have someone tell me that Beyonce was never pregnant, Obama was born in Kenya (yes people are still saying this), the United States is invading Texas, Jesus wants you to become a millionaire, there is a lot of debate about climate change among scientists, racism doesn't exist, and being gay is just like being black.
Now I know many of my readers believe some of what I just listed. So the question becomes how exactly would I be able to disprove these beliefs. We have science. We have legal proceedings. We have books. We have data. None of that matters when people choose what they believe.
And it doesn't get better when you discuss these topics with highly educated individuals. If anything it gets worse. Highly educated people tend to believe they are smarter than everyone else because they actually are smarter than everyone else. This lends itself to disillusionment. Part of the intellectuals ego is knowing something that no one else knows. Therefore in a quest to be different than normal people they will put a lot of effort into proving something that is widely accepted as truth. After all that is how you become a great, you prove the Earth is round.
The problem with this is that in order to prove you are great you have to prove someone else is wrong. You not only have to prove them wrong but they have to admit they are wrong too. And therein lies the problem, the human ego will not allow itself to admit when it is wrong. So we have come up with the perfect defense, never listen to anyone that has a thought that is different.
So we have wrapped ourselves in walled intellectual gardens. If we don't get the information from within our garden then the information is invalid. This prevents us from ever having to admit we were wrong and it prevents anyone from telling us we are wrong. Everyone in our community is just like us after all.
There are very few people in this world that actually make an effort to never build these walls and even fewer that try to break down the walls of others. It would probably be easier to break down physical walls than it would be to break down these philosophical walls.
Humans, just like any other animal, prefer to be with creatures that are similar to ourselves both in appearance and beliefs. History tells us that it has always been this way and there is no reason to think it will change in the near future.
