This past week we almost had a government shutdown (over a fraction of a 1 percentage of the budget mind you). Post offices had signs on Friday letting people know that if the government shuts down, we will still be opened. This is what the country has come to and its political system. It is an US vs them type of world. My way or the highway.
We are at the point where it does not even seem like most of the population even wants to live in the same country anymore because those other guys and gals are trying to ruin it and take it over. We are no longer a country where difference can be tolerated, and freedoms are allowed.
Depending on your political views people will agree with that statement but for many different reasons and ones that directly conflict each other. So that brings us to where we are now, deciding the future of country, and defining what we want it to be because it seems that schism has gotten pretty big and probably will never close or even get smaller.
The American people starting this week have to decide what kind of government do you want and how much money are you willing to pay for it. As some like to say there is no such thing as a free lunch.
So what programs do you want to cut? Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare,?
Do you want to eliminate public schools?
Are you going to continue to cut taxes so that the government can not longer pay its bills?
Are you going to stop the practice of "corporate welfare" where taxpayer money goes to big corporations?
Are you going to not raise the debt ceiling and void the full faith and credit of the United States of America?
These are the real questions that the American people are going to have to answer. Cutting funding to Planned Parenthood and the National Corporation of Public Broadcasting and cutting spending and waste is not going to balance the budget. The days of people making bad life choices and the government taking care of you are over. People are going to have to make some real hard choices.
When you ask people do you want to cut spending, cut taxes, and reduce the debt they are all for that, but when you ask them do they want to cut Social Security, cut Medicaid, and other programs they are completely against that. Well it is adult time now and you can't have it both ways.
The country is going to have to decide what they really want. We have reached the event horizon, and there will be no going back. The decisions we make now will effect the country easily for the next 100 years. We will either be a country that has found an identity or we will be a country or separate tribes fighting over the scraps of our once great nation. We can either compromise now or all fall later. The choice lays with the American people.
