What did you do for pre-Black Friday day? What's that you say. Well that is the holiday formerly known as Thanksgiving. You know the day where you gather with family and friends and be thankful for all the ways that God has blessed you. You know the day you learned about in school where a group of First Americans helped the Pilgrims survive in a new land. One of the few events of pure peace that we have in this country.
Well the importance of that day has been replaced by something on the opposite end of the spectrum, greed. That is what Black Friday is about, greed. A lot of people, in most cases, spending money they don't have, to buy things they don't need, being as mean and rude as they can. Remember how many people have been killed during these shopping frenzies?
We have developed a national holiday based on stores ripping off customers with a practice that used to be illegal, the bait and switch. For example a store will list an item like a 50” TV for $199 to get everyone's attention. I guess the twist that makes it legal is that in very small thin print they will say only 3 available at this price. Now we all now that the thousands of people seeing this ad completely miss that part, they think that the store has plenty of them. Now every store doesn't do this, but far more do than don't.
And let's look at the shoppers. Is this not the near where everyone is talking about occupy the 1%? But somehow they have manage to find money to shop for things they don't need. Very few people are strictly shopping for things that they need or that special gift that is at a great price. No most people are simply gorging on the thrill of shopping, which for many people is an addiction that many never treat and they will definitely suffer for one day.
So to all the people that will be out on Black Friday, in extremely long lines, in most cases in the cold, God bless you. There will be rudeness, there will be fights, but I pray no one is killed. To the employees that have to work in this chaos I definitely pray for you all. This year will be especially tough because many of you will not be able to spend Thanksgiving with your families because the corporate bosses decided to open at 12:00 AM Friday so they can make sure to get money early from as many people as possible. I over heard a salesperson saying that the way they were scheduled they had 3 free hours for the holiday.
Tell me what a person does and I will tell you what they value. When a country can not even take one complete day to all come together regardless of religion or culture to simply be thankful, but can to be as greedy and materialistic as possible, well I guess you will understand why the country and the world at large is the way it is. At least he has a job, right?
