Personal responsibility. It is something that human beings find difficult if not impossible to do. Show me a human being that takes responsibility for their actions and I will show you some of the greatest leaders ever in history. The concept of personal responsibility is so rare that I would say you would be hard pressed to find it in your life starting with yourself.
Let's take a look at the economy and the state of the country today. Things are really bad for most Americans. I would say that at least 25% of us are unemployed or underemployed struggling to survive. The majority of the rest of us are probably one paycheck or being laid off from being in the same boat.
With things being this bad you would think that people were banning together, to improve schools, job training, and investing in the infrastructure of our country. You would think that people were working harder than ever to study and educate themselves and improve their health. Instead you have people blaming politicians freely elected by the people for their problems. They blame megacorporations that they freely give their money to have the latest greatest thing that will be outdated in a week or fall apart. They will blame celebrities that people spend billions of dollars following and supporting every single day. And lastly they will blame the people in their personal lives like their spouse, children, family, co-workers, and neighbors for holding them down.
As you see the blame never lands on the person in the mirror. We live in a world where that person never, and I do mean never does a single thing wrong. That person in the end is only concerned with self. They are not concerned with what anyone else wants or thinks. They do not feel they have a duty to anyone but themselves. No one is going to tell them what to do.
What kind of world do you believe you will have if this is the way that the majority of people live their lives? Could it be the one that we have? I world where everything is based on how much money you have. A place where sex is more valued than love. A place where we kill people just because we can. A place where it make sense to have 100 luxury cars and yet millions die of starvation. I place where feeling good for a moment is more important that planning for your entire life.
So the next time you want to blame the President, Democrats, Republicans, Tea Party, Rich people, Poor people, pundits, Christians, Muslims, Jews, "The Man", conspiracy or whoever your personal boogeyman is start with the person in the mirror and make sure that person is doing their absolute best to make the world a better place. If that person is failing then you have no room to talk about any one else. Maybe one day we will be in a world that thinks of others, before self, but history says otherwise.
