If you are old like me you probably remember the phrase, “It takes a big man to admit when he is wrong.” In 2011 it would seem that concept has long past. It seems that only a few people will ever admit when they are wrong. Apologies are a thing of the past.
Today It is seen as a sign of weakness to say you are wrong. Maybe people think it makes their intelligence go down. Maybe it is pride. Maybe it is arrogance. Maybe it is all the above and many more things but getting a person to admit they were wrong or made a mistake is nearly impossible.
What really makes it shocking for me is the very same people that never admit when they are wrong are the same people that say that no one is perfect. I am still trying to understand how it is possible to not be perfect yet never make a mistake at the same time but I digress.
And there is no point in bringing facts and research into the conversation because it will not make any difference. Just this week we have seen average people argue with scientists about physics and Congress rush to destroy the internet and freely admit they do not understand how the Internet and technology work, because well they are not “nerds”.
Anyone that is married will tell you that a marriage does not work when both parties are “right” all the time. Maybe that is the reason divorce rates are so high. Socrates wrote that the wise know that they know nothing, I guess that means not many wise people in this world. That would explain a lot of things.
