The Farberware 4.7 stand mixer is a nice alternative to more costly stand mixers on the market today. It come with a 4.7 quart size bowl, a splatter/pour guard, and 3 different mixer attachments (whisk, paddle, and hook). It also has a port to attach a pasta machine or meat grinder attachment.
This mixer really was able to meet all my baking needs as far as mixing batters for cakes and cookies as well as the power required for mixing thick bread doughs. The hook and paddle attachments are made in a sturdy die cast metal that is coated with appears to be a non-stick plastic-like material. Both of these attachments were able to handle the typical cake, cookies, and bread jobs, but the whisk attachment was a bit questionable.
Although the wires on the whisk seem to be of good quality, they are attached together by a plastic center column. Although the plastic was sturdy there is the question of how well will the wires hold up over a period of time. I think the durability of the material in practical use and handling may weaken the plastic. Now that may be a bit too finicky but I did not feel that the whisk attachment was built for long usage and though Farberware gives the mixer a 2 year warranty, the warranty is very limited.
Most of the mixer is made out of die-cast metal and has the look and feel of a the Kitchen Aid Mixer however the bowl plate is made of plastic. This may or may not be a problem for different users. There are suction cups at the base of the mixer that really aid in stability while mixing heavier doughs.
This mixer has a tilt head feature that requires you to press the lever at the back of the mixer to gain access to drive shaft and the removal of the bowl. The mixer is 13 inches high with its head in the down position and 19 inches when the head is tilted back. The mixer weighs about 20 lbs which might be a little heavy to move around if limited on counter-space. I did like that the head locks in place once it is lifted to its full height, giving complete access to the batter inside the bowl.
The mixer has 6 mixing speeds as well as the pulse dial that allows for mixing ingredients into the batter quickly and then stopping automatically after a few seconds. At this price you are getting a great value with a lot of features that cost twice the price. It comes in 5 different colors (including teal) all just under $100 making this a great gift for any baker for the holidays this year.
