When you actually look at the game console industry you may be surprised at what you find. If you read most gaming blogs you would think that Xbox was the greatest system of the last generation, the Wii U is not next generation, and Sony doesn't really have that many first party games.
The truth ( I know this is hard to believe) is actually quite different. The Wii won the last console generation, the Wii U is in the same league as the Xbox One and Playstation 4, and the 3DS is the best selling game system in the world.
Again I know this is not what you will read in the average gaming blog and not what your local Gamestop sales associate told you but a quick look of actual sales numbers will tell a different story. So why the disconnect between reality and perception?
That is actually easy to explain. Most of the people that write these articles are gamers that hate all things Nintendo. For them Nintendo is not cool enough. Nintendo is something they did when they were a kid and they are all grown up now. They would rather focus on some obscure game or something rated M than something like Mario or Pokemon. So they make sure to make this point every chance they get.
They are also very specs driven. They want the hardware that is the absolute best, not just the hardware that meets their needs. As the Wii proved however the average person just wants to play a game they like regardless of the hardware. How much processing power does it take to play Candy Crush?
It was not that long ago when everyone was saying how much of a failure the 3DS was. It got off to a rough start with a high price point and a lot of complaints from old people with bad eyes but today it now rules the gaming world and that is a gaming world that now includes the iPad and Nexus 7 and a lot of good games for a fraction of the cost of the average 3DS game.
Even with Wii U sales not meeting expectations look for that to change this year as Nintendo release games like Pikmin 3 that have a great following. After attending the Nintendo Experience at Best Buy this summer and seeing a store full of Nintendo fans of all ages it is pretty clear that Nintendo is not going anywhere anytime soon.
They may not be cutting edge all the time or have titles that hard core gamers love outside of Legend of Zelda and Metroid, but they have plenty of titles that are household names. Everyone knows who Mario is but everyone does not know who Master Chief, Drake, and Snake are. And that will make all the difference in the world.
Too many people forget that if it were not for Nintendo, the gaming world as we know it may not even exist today. Games are like any other media; they come in different flavors with different tastes. There are more than a few people that like the taste of Nintendo so they will be just fine.
