Helping a woman with her sense of style is very difficult. She may ignore everything that she has ever read about style and body types preferring instead to keep up with the latest and greatest fashion trends. Let's face it how we look as women is a very important aspect of our lives. It is important in how we feel about ourselves and how the world reacts to us. It does not always seem fair but it is part of human nature.
It is extremely hard for those of us that fall outside of society's idea of beauty. If you are over a size 8, weighing more than 130 lbs, and not slender; you can expect to get some grief in your life about your appearance. It doesn't matter how talented or how successful you are as a woman, there will always be people that have negative things to say about your appearance.
These unfortunate circumstances can help someone obtain a greater appreciation for who they are and love themselves even more. It can also make some women fight to buck society's idea of beauty by trying to one up the competition and that is what I want to talk to you about today.
This is not going to be a pleasant conversation but it really is one we need to have. Many of you are going to disagree and that is okay, you go ahead and do you, but there may be a few that will want to hear these style ideas.
First let's talk about fashion and design. This may be hard for some people to accept but all fashion is not designed for all body types. The truth is that women, more so than men, come in all kinds of different shapes and sizes. The military learned a long time ago that men shapes are basically the same when all else is equal. So if you have two guys that are the same size then they can wear the same clothes. Not so with women.
Women have extra curves, that makes us all unique. It also means that an outfit might look great on Kathy, but not so much on Sheila. Designers have a certain body type in mind when they design their clothes. If you are not that body type then the outfit just is not going to be flattering on you. It is not a put down, it is just how it is. There just isn't a one size fits all to fashion.
There is a current trend where larger women are wearing styles and fashions that were designed for smaller women. While there are a few larger ladies that have body types that can pull off these looks, most of the time it just does not come off as appealing.
If you are a woman that is confident in the image you project, you go girl and do your thing cause it works for you. But if you are a woman that wants to look your best within current trends then you might really want to consult a professional seamstress or fashion stylist that is going to help you look your best.
Don't just find someone that is going to co-sign on things that you say you want to wear but find someone that is going to challenge your choices, meaning do not ask your mother, sisters, and girlfriends. A talented professional will help guide you to the image that is truly a reflection of who you are.
The most important thing to keep in mind about style is that your style is your style so make sure to wear things that make you feel great about yourself. Sometimes that means that others may not understand. It also means sometimes that dress just doesn’t work for you.
