Summer is in full swing and many parents are struggling to find ways to keep their children busy.
Some parents will be shipping their children off to a summer camp filled with activities. Others are going to send their precious offspring to visit distant relatives. However for many parents their kids will be at home just sitting around goofing off all day over the summer break.
Many parents have had struggles helping their children keep their busy energetic minds focused on their studies during the school year. There are many parents who believe that idle hands are the devil’s workshop, so they keep their children busy to keep them out of trouble.
Yet never getting a break from studying even over the summer can be very frustrating for many children. Some will become burnt out from the constant studying before they even reach college. If you want your child to continue learning try making plans that will make their learning experience fun and not just a chore or punishment.
Take some time to plan an actual vacation away from home with the kids. By visiting a neighboring state for the summer there are a number of learning opportunities for the whole family. Visiting a city in a different state could be the very thing for those idle minds that will make memories that have a lasting affect for you and your kids.
If you want your children to learn and experience new things then think about things that interest you and your children. If you have a love of history then look for historical sites that you can visit. Often times you can schedule a tour with a guide that will educate everyone on the history of the site.
If you have children that love the outdoors then you can plan a trip in nature so they can explore. Reading books and watching videos is a great way to learn but nothing beats actually experiencing nature in person. From kayaking down a river to hiking in a natural park, nature is a great way for your children to learn and well as get an appreciation of the planet.
To help your children with their writing skills you can have they keep a journal of their adventures. It will teach them how to express themselves in words and to think about what they have observed during the day. These are skills that they will need for the English and science classes and things many of us need at work.
We have to remember that life is a balance and all work and no play can be just as harmful as no work and all play. Children need time to be children and not so caught up by the rat race that stresses out adults.
It is our job to teach our children how to work hard but still enjoy life. There are more ways to learn than in a classroom. Children need to unplug and get outside and play. They need to learn about history and take in the arts. They need to be children because you only get one childhood so we should make theirs as enjoyable as possible especially while they learn.
