In ministry we often feel that there are not enough hours in the day to do the work of the Lord. We always feel that we are not doing enough and we want to do so much more. We see people in need everyday and we want to always help. There is no joy like serving God but after years of service even the strongest in faith get a little tired at times.
This is why we must always remember to rest our mind and soul and understand the limits of what we can do. In a world where people feel they have to constantly be doing something and pushing themselves to the max, we must examine why we feel this need.
Often times the reason we push ourselves so much is because we are not content in our current situation. We want it to be more than it is. We feel like something is missing if we do not complete some certain goal. If we are not the lead singer in the choir, building that new church, or getting our doctorate in theology then somehow we are less than what God intended us to be.
So when we are in this mindset and we see someone else not pushing as hard as we are we think that person is doing something wrong. They are not serving God like we are. If only they were doing more then we would be doing more of God’s work.
The thing we forget, because there is only one type of person that feels this way, is a person that is new to the service of God. See anyone that has been in service for awhile knows that it is a burden that few want to bare even though it is an easier burden than the one we carry.
When start a race you are going to be running a lot harder in the beginning than you are in the end. For the people that have been in the race for awhile they know it is a journey and not a sprint. They know that if they don’t follow the Spirit then they are going to sprint right into trouble because they are too anxious.
So when you see someone taking their nets out of the water and walking back to shore, understand that they are simply mending their nets. It could be because the fish are not biting that day. It could be because it is their time to rest. It could be because they need to pray to keep their spirit up.
See while you are watching them to see what they are doing, you don’t understand that they have been there many times before. They take time to mend their nets so they can return stronger than ever. See we are only human and we can only do what we can do. When we do our best that is all that we can do.
There are too many Christians running around trying to do a bunch of things that they believe are tasks for God when they are simply doing tasks for self. They are trying to use their work to fill an emptiness inside themselves. They are not content in where they are in life so they are trying to use good deeds to full up that space.
What we often forget is part of our service of God is to do exactly what he tells us to do. Sometimes that is to push through but other times it is to be still and not move. When we start seeing ourselves crumble and break down then that is a sign we are not on the right path.
When that happens we need to take a step back and realize that it is time for use to explain ourselves and our tools. To make sure everything is in good working order. So we can perform to the best of our abilities and be content with what we are able to accomplish. The goal is to build works for Heaven not here on Earth.
