We always hear the phrase “A Burning Desire”. Hardly ever do we truly pay attention to its actual meaning. A desire is a conscious impulse toward something that promises enjoyment or satisfaction in its attainment. The nature fire is to destroy what is there and consume what is left. To alter the original state down to the very chemical make up or to burn it.
Let’s take this and apply it to the spiritual. When we seek the desires of our hearts, it becomes a spiritual fire in us. A spiritual burning that can not be quenched and never put out, only replaced. A never ending cycle. Once you consume a desire it will always consume you and then your desire will be for the next thing and the cycle repeats.
Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Psalms 37:4 delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Once you understand the purpose and nature of fire, then you can fully understand the spiritual danger of desiring anything else but the Creator.
To consume a desire is just simply working towards gaining something. And the desire consuming you is simply you doing the actions to maintain it. So let’s look at an example so we can see the danger of this. John desires a house. John goes and gets a job to get the house. Then john goes to the bank to get a loan for the house. John is approved for the loan and starts looking for houses. Now John has the house. So he works harder to be able to maintain and keep the house.
Seems simple and harmless right? Well let’s look at the spiritual side of it.
John took his desire off of the Creator and on to the house. Now John is not working to do the will of the Creator but to gain a house. Then John makes a spiritual contract that spiritually states that he will pay back this money no matter what.
In order to understand the spiritual contract you have to understand that Satan can not create, he can only distort and contort that which has already been created. Since he can not create, then he is not the Creator, so he does not have true ownership over that which has been created. Therefore he must deal in contracts.
Now let us look spiritually deeper into the loan. Money comes from trees. Satan did not create the tree, but he can cause man to distort contort it into something that can be used for his gain. (Like the money to buy the house and the paper used for the contract to get the money. ) So now this money under the disguise of a loan is presented to John. Since John’s desire is to have a house, this desire blindly leads him to believe that this is the only way to gain a house, or this is the type of house he has to have. Now before he can physically sign the contract, John will have to verbally or spiritually agree to it first. The Bible says out of the mouth speaks life and death. (Proverb 18:21 The tongue has the power of life and death…). John speaks his breath of life on this contract which causes spiritual death. (You will always be asked if you agree to these conditions before you sign.) Physically he is agreeing to pay back a loan. Spiritually John is agreeing to do whatever needs to be done to pay this money back.( Proverbs 22:7 …and the borrower is servant to the lender.) John is agreeing to put his soul in jeopardy to pay off this loan if need be. His soul becomes the sacrifice for the house. Now John is handed a pen to sign and date this physical and spiritual contract.
John buys the house, and the roles switch. What John once consumed now consumes him. Now he has extra bills he has to pay. Which means John needs more money. John also has rooms that he feels need furniture that has to represent his new standard of living. Now comes in the new desires and once this desire is fulfilled and his new man-made god is filled with gifts, more often then not John will want a new house. Thus the cycle continues.
Spiritually John starts spending more time gaining and maintaining his desires and less time praying, reading, learning and seeking the Creator. During this time new creative ways of gaining his desires are presented to him, and since he is not connecting to the Creator of all things, these new creative ways seem logical to him because it is his desire guiding his logic and not the will of the Father. (Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.) These new creative ways that seem logical to him are actually abominations unto Our Heavenly Father, but he can not see it because he is blinded by his desire. The end results in the spiritual death of John’s soul that he already physically and spiritually signed away in the contract.
Here in lies the true danger in desiring anything else but the will of the Creator. You can replace the name John with your name. And his desire with your desire. It does not matter what desire is. Be it a house, car, career, husband/wife, children, fame, etc… If your sole desire is not to do the will of the Father then it will lead you from him and burn you soul.
Matthew 6: 28-34
28"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
