When you are like me, and business has been your life, you often hear talk about being a “professional”. Usually when people use these words they mean that they are focused and determined to make as much money as possible, by any means necessary. Often what's lost in that discussion is the idea of ethics, integrity, and charity.
I recently attended a Business Basics 101 Workshop given by KeJohnna Owens and Cassandra Bradford. Now if you have ever attended a business workshop before you know how they go. The speaker will generally make a sales pitch about some “product” they are have, tell you how great it is suppose to be, and then tell you how you can purchase the product at a great discounted rate just special for you because you attended the workshop. They give you little to no useful information. The worst part of this is that often these workshops are given under the guise of being supported by your city or some other government entity, which tends to lead to people being taken advantage by these “professionals.”
The Business Basics 101 Workshop was definitely the opposite of this. It was truly a workshop that provided useful information to those brave people in business for themselves. There were many people there that became energized with renewed energy to not only make their business grow but also make their families and community better. I would expect nothing less from Mr. Owens who spends a considerable amount of time out in the community not only working to take care of his family, but also working hard to help as many people as he can take care of theirs as well. I can see from the projects that Ms. Bradford takes on that she does the same thing. I wonder when these two sleep.
So when you are dealing with a business as either as professional or as a consumer, just ask yourself does this person seem to have a real interest in me? If you have dealt with them before did they value your business? Is their only goal making money? Do they care about something more than just how much money they can make off of you? Once you answer these questions positively then you will start to understand exactly what a true professional is and then you should seek them out.
