Hot or Hype?
I became a Justin Timberlake fan after seeing him perform Senorita on the Grammy’s one year. He rocked it! And he didn’t even dance, but he played the piano. It was so soulful and he so made me feel the song that I went out the very next day and bought his album Justified. (And I don’t buy albums!) But I had to shake all that. I didn’t want to give a bias opinion. I cleared my mind, put on a straight face ready to review the much anticipated, heavily talked about, hyped up third album; The 20/20 Experience. Song comes on I’m listening as if I never heard of him before. But as soon as he began to sing I let out an inner scream JUSTIINN!!
Okay so I won’t waste your time. We will get right to it. Music lovers this is for you. Whether your thing is Pop or R&B, you should be good with this album. Justin is executive producer of this project, but has again teamed up with Timberland to lay out ten tracks with 2 bonus found on the deluxe CD. You are sure to get your money’s worth as eight of the songs push to the 7 minute mark or beyond. And yes, true to Timberland form, you get a totally different feel of the song after the 5 minute mark.
Answers to the big questions:
Is it like his last projects? Yes and No. Yes with regard to we still have our Timberland flavor. We still have a good fusion of pop and rhythm and blues. But no in that Justin has definitely showed his growth in this album. “Justified” was a young man’s view towards love, relationships. “Future/Sounds” was a lot bolder and sexier in tone, here he took a pinch of both of those and added some grown man to produce more of an old school adult sound. If you started out with Justin with Justified, you are up to speed with 20/20. And that’s good thing, music should grow with the artist and its audience.
Is it better than Future Sex/Love Sounds? Future Sex/Love Sounds was the bomb! The 2006 album has a lot of heavy hitters including, Sexy back, My Love, Until the End of time to name a few. It sold over 10 million units worldwide, 4 million in the US alone! So of course, every JT fan wants to know how does “The 20/20 Experience” compare? While I like the 20/20 Experience, at this time, I can’t say that it is better than FS/LS. I just can’t…I can’t. But after listening to it once, I already have a few favorite cuts. Pusher Girl, That Girl, Strawberry Bubblegum, Blue Ocean….I may be changing my tune soon. Hey I did say “at this time.”
Should you buy it? In this economy I encourage folks to save money. But, if you are a music lover feel free to treat yourself on this one. This CD will give you your money’s worth. You get ten tracks and eight of them are like having two in one. This is one that you would take on a road trip and just ride to without skipping every other song. It’s good music!
Could we have done without all the hype? YES! America, please stop doing that. But it is Hot. Well done… JUST-IIN!! (okay, I’m done )
